Due to his overwhelming dadly energy, Halfeye often tries to make decisions for younger cats, especially his children. He tries to limit the things they can do sometimes out of paternal concern. He means well but it can be irritating and come off as overbearing to those who don’t know him well.
If Halfeye is waiting for something, you can guarantee he will not sit gracefully and wait. He will wait quietly for about five minutes before he starts moaning and pacing around, complaining about how long whatever it is is taking. This inevitably can cause his clan mates to get annoyed at him and tell him to sit still and be patient, to which the tom just grumbles and sulks.
History: Halfeye was born in a twoleg home to two purebred Siamese parents. He was born in a litter of 4, with two sisters and a brother. The twoleg named him Red, after his colouring. His siblings were named Crimson, Ruby and Apple, and the young kits spent their early days playing and enjoying their mother’s company.
One day, new twolegs came to the home and the siblings were separated from their mother and each other and given to new homes.Red was given to a family with a young child who absolutely adored her new kitten and wanted to take Red everywhere with her. For the most part, the young cat was happy with this, and relished the attention he was given. They did, however, declaw him when he was just about old enough.
However, this happiness didn’t last.
Red’s young twoleg didn’t really know how to look after a kitten and, one day, accidentally dropped Red in a way that caused his jaw to get broken. His twolegs took him to a vet to see if it could be fixed. This was going to cost them too much money, so they abandoned the injured kitten on the street, promising to buy their daughter a new, prettier kitten.
Red was left on a street corner in a busy twoleg city. He had no idea how to hunt for prey or scavenge for food, or where it was safe to sleep. He had no idea what these noisey monsters were that raced up and down the street, other than that they terrified him and he never wanted to get close to them.
The young cat spent many nights curled up wherever he could find shelter - cardboard boxes in alleyways, hidden under twoleg porches, anywhere he could get out of the rain and cold. He was freezing and hungry and miserable, a far cry from his previously cushy kittypet life. And even when he could find food, his still broken jaw hurt gave him a lot of trouble and pain.
One day, Red stumbled into a junkyard while trying to find food. He was attacked by a junkyard dog, who damaged Red’s right eye beyond repair and left several deep gashes on his legs and sides. The young cat resigned himself to die but the dog was driven off by what appeared to be a group of organised cats, led by a large cat covered in scars. They drove the dog away and carried Red back to their little camp in a nearby park.
After a while, it became clear to Red that Scar was a cruel, tyrannical leader. He took more prey than he was owed, bullied the other cats, and even attacked those who dared to question him. So Red bided his time, waiting until he felt he was strong enough to leave and survive by himself again. Aspen, one of the other group cats, confided in him that she also wished to leave. They planned together to leave under the cover of night when Scar was out hunting and, eventually, they got their chance, escaping into the wild.
Red and Aspen first made it to the edge of twolegplace and into the forest and, initially, did very well for themselves. Aspen was a very good hunter and her skill made up for the fact that Red couldn’t use his claws and was never allowed the opportunity to catch live prey. They lived in a hollow tree trunk and, over time, the two grew closer and became mates.
When Aspen told Red that she was expecting kits, he was ecstatic and tried his best to feed her during the pregnancy. He doted on her throughout the entire pregnancy and the pair were incredibly in love. Red couldn’t wait to begin a life with his new family, especially because Aspen seemed to love him despite his somewhat imposing physical appearance.
Unfortunately, the kitting was hard on Aspen. The kits were born healthy enough but Aspen was left weak from blood loss and Red didn’t know how to help her. He promised her that he would take care of their kits and set off to find them somewhere safe to live. He knew he couldn’t feed them by himself so he had to find another nursing she-cat or, if it came down to it, take them to some two-legs.
As the kits grew up, Red found himself wanting more and more to leave the barn and get as far away from twolegplace as he possibly could. They had caused him a great deal of pain and he didn’t want to raise his children anywhere near them. He spoke to Ferret about this and, while sad that he wanted to leave, she understood his desire to be free and raise his children in safety. She and some of the other barn cats told Red about rumours of a bunch of cats living in groups in the caves relatively close by, and he decided this was his best shot.
Red took Hope and Flame and the three of them set off. The kits were big enough now that they had begun to be able to catch small prey themselves, and Red let the kits catch their own food, choosing to simply abstain himself so that they had more to eat. He chose not to tell them he needed to eat, letting them believe that he was catching his own prey at night while they were sleeping.
It took days for them to reach what they would later find out was Skyclan territory, Red starting to get weak from hunger and thirst. A patrol found them and took them back to the camp, where Red and his kits were introduced to Ridgestar and the rest of Skyclan, including the deputy Lightshatter. The medicine cat rushed Red to the medicine cat den to check on him, as it was obvious at this point that he was suffering from malnutrition. He was treated and fed and nursed back to health.
